While a large number of texts has been written on the care of the general surgical patient, heretofore there has been no ready reference for the postoperative care of the cardiac surgical patient. As the authors state, patients undergoing cardiac surgery indeed do develop complications which are unique to their situation or ones whose manifestations or treatment are modified by the nature of their disease and operation.
