Recent decades have seen increasing awareness of the value of sound statistical design and analysis in medical investigations. Hill's book, first published in 1937, has contributed to this awareness. Is the battle won? It is appropriate to examine this question relative to the ANNALS. Articles published during the first 6 months of 1937 and of 1966 were compared (excluding editorials, book reviews, and news items). Sixty per cent of 74 articles in 1937 and 61% of 117 in 1966 were concerned with case reports, comments on fewer than 10 patients, or other topics for which statistical analysis is clearly not
