For years acid-base nomograms have assisted students in their struggle to understand the regulation of extracellular acidity. By providing a means for visualizing the physiologic permutations of the carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer pair, nomograms have simplified the description of this crucial, biologic regulatory system. All of the popular nomograms, however, including those of Shock and Hastings (1), Singer and Hastings (2), Davenport (3), and Siggaard-Andersen (4), have depicted acidity in the conventional units of pH and, therefore, have been wedded to the rather complicated mathematics of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation (see below).
