The output on research on the thymus has reached explosive proportions during the past 5 years. Considerable credit for stimulating this state of affairs is due to the elegant experimental efforts of Dr. Donald Metcalf. It is therefore fitting that he has written a monograph on this organ. This effort is not intended to be an exhaustive review of the literature, although it succeeds very well in accomplishing this, but rather it is designed to familiarize colleagues and students in allied fields with what has now become an extremely complex subject.
