The old Anglo-American viewpoint of tropical medicine is slowly changing—at last! This special field of medicine emerged brilliantly at the end of the last century with the establishment of the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool and with the initial special courses on tropical diseases sponsored by William Osler at Johns Hopkins. Soldiers and scientists together made successful advances in the Philippine Islands, Cuba, and the Panama Canal Zone.
