The spectacular advances in our knowledge of the nature of the gene have accentuated our curiosity in the relevance of these findings to our understanding of human disease. The prescient insights of Archibald Gar rod early in the century have been amply confirmed. Genetical theory has provided a unifying concept for a bewildering number of bizarre medical sports. Detection of the genetically controlled primary defect points, in many instances, to the institution of rational therapy and "puts paid" to the archaic aphorism that the only cure for the hereditary disorders is the grave.
