Sudden unexpected death of a young athlete is not an unfamiliar event, but, as part of the uniquely poignant tragedy it represents, there are often few medical facts to report. In such cases there is a limited number of possible mechanisms, of which a sudden cardiac arrhythmia is one. For this reason we recently examined the cardiac conduction system from two young athletes who died suddenly and in whom the routine necropsy provided no explanation. Patient A.
