This presentation concerns a series of seven cases of ruptured ventricular septum in the course of myocardial infarction with additional observations on four patients with ruptured cardiac septum due to trauma.
Hemodynamic studies were performed 6 days to 1½ years after the septal rupture. The magnitude of left-to-right shunt ranged from 2.5 to 4.3 times the systemic cardiac output, the largest pulmonary flow being 17 liters/min. Systolic pressure in the right ventricle ranged from 30 to 78 mm Hg but was always significantly lower than systemic pressure.
