During the last 4 years a total of 637 patients with various types of ichthyosis have been examined. The majority of these could be classified under one of four headings depending on clinical characteristics and mode of inheritance. Ichthyosis vulgaris (335 patients) is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and has an estimated frequency of approximately 1 in 1,000 persons. Sex-linked (or more precisely X-linked) ichthyosis (194 patients) was found to have a frequency of approximately 1 in 6,000 men, and it has been established beyond doubt that the gene for sex-linked ichthyosis and that for the Xg blood group
