In the preface of this fourth edition, the authors state that they are writing a textbook of biochemistry designed primarily for the first-year medical student. They have succeeded in this aim to an admirable degree. The material selected has obviously been given careful consideration, and the writing is generally clear, direct, and understandable.
On the other hand, the authors' stated goal of avoiding extensive discussions of basic concepts of physical chemistry and organic chemistry has, in places, been achieved to such a degree that quality is sacrificed.
