The authors state that their aim is to correlate the fundamental disturbances present in congestive heart failure with the clinical picture and therapy. The first chapter is a brief description of the normal cardiovascular system, with emphasis on those basic properties of the heart concerned with its function as a pump. A brief discussion then of the etiology and the pathogenesis of heart failure is followed by the usual progression of remarks on diagnosis and treatment. Additional short chapters discuss refractory cardiac failure and pulmonary edema. A list of recommended references follows each chapter. This is good; this is a
