Although primarily a survey of the natural histories of patients observed over the years by Dr. White and his colleagues, this volume is also, in essence, a chronicle of the development of modern cardiology. The usefulness of the long follow-up is illustrated by a spectrum of patients with serious heart disease as well as by observations on the signficance of selected findings in essentially normal subjects. With this basic theme are supplied numerous historical notes and references to the early literature, and throughout runs the important concept of early and continued treatment of heart disease detected in its early stages.
