One can assume from the number of editions through which these books have gone that they sell very well. At least they must promise to fill a need of practitioners. How well they fill this need cannot be guessed from sales figures. But the critic's task is not to account for or predict the sales or lack of sales of a book. Rather he must ascertain the aim of the author and then scan his success at the target by yardsticks of principle and practice.
