The authors develop their hypothesis relating diabetes mellitus, obesity, dental caries, periodontal disease, varicose veins and hemorrhoids, peptic ulcer, coronary atherosclerosis, and primary infections with Escherichia coli to dietary overuse of refined carbohydrates. The argument is based on epidemiological analysis.
