About the time this issue of the ANNALS reaches you many members of the American College of Physicians will be closeted with themselves taking a look at the state of their own medical knowledge. They are participating in what appears to be a completely new idea in postgraduate medical education: the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program.
The idea briefly is this. The most critical factor in a physician's continuing education is motivation; he must want to continue to learn. Such motivation is more likely if he recognizes specific deficiencies in his useful medical knowledge. This Program
