Students and physicians who know the plan and style of previous editions of the Cecil-Loeb Textbook of Medicine will find little difference in this new, twelfth edition. With a few improvements to be mentioned below, this book remains for the most part an encyclopedia of diseases. Present-day concepts are catalogued under conventional paradigms in accurate and exhaustive detail to the degree allowed by this format. Few concessions are made to the need of the beginning student in clinical medicine for clear emphasis on "first things first," and, unlike its superior competitor "Harrison," "Beeson-McDermott" does little to instruct in the rational
