With the publishing of Physiology or Medicine 1901-1921, Elsevier has fulfilled the Biblical prophecy that the first shall be last. This chronologically first volume, recording the Nobel awards in biomedical science up to 1921, completes the set of three that close at 1962. The format is that of the previous volumes. For each laureate we are given the presentation address, his Nobel lecture, and a biography. The presentation address describes the background and the significance of the laureate's work at the time of the award. The lecture is printed, in most cases, as delivered by the laureate.
