The history of medicine in Chile from the time of the Independence up to 1940 was briefly outlined. Throughout that period, contacts in the medical field were made almost exclusively with European countries, notably France and Germany, where the most gifted young physicians went to perfect their qualifications, afterwards taking up professorships in our schools of medicine. A few slight contacts were established in the course of the 1920's and developed by slow degrees. The first fellowships to enable Chilean doctors to pursue their studies in the United States were granted during the 1930's, mainly by the Guggenheim Foundation. In
