To study the relation between social mobility and coronary heart disease (CHD) from January 1, 1962, through December 21, 1966, sickness absences and deaths potentially representing episodes of CHD among the 270,000 men in the Bell System were investigated. Clinical characteristics, electrocardiogram, and laboratory and pathological findings were reported to New York and classified according to the American Heart Association U. S. Public Health Service criteria. Completeness of reporting was checked by independent review of 1,735 death certificates, representing 98% of all deaths in the System in 1964.
