Previous studies have shown that a marked increase in left atrial pressure occurs during exercise in patients with significant mitral stenosis. In 17 patients the percentage increase of left atrial pressure was linearly related to the percentage decrease of the A2-OS interval from rest to exercise. The question remained as to whether the exercise state with an associated increase in cardiac output, or heart rate alone with no increase in cardiac output but with a shortening of diastolic filling time, effected this change.
