The existence of preoperative fibrinolysis and the response to treatment with epsilon aminocaproic acid (EACA) were studied in six patients with cyanotic or acyanotic congenital heart disease. The fibrinolytic mechanism and the third stage of coagulation were evaluated with  euglobulin clot lysis time,  serial thrombin time,  platelet count,  plasma fibrinogen, and  presence of split products of fibrinogen. The first and second stages of coagulation were studied with prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, and factor V assay. All six patients had primary fibrinolysis of varying degrees of severity and were treated preoperatively with EACA. This resulted
