Since the effect and mechanism of action of growth hormone on erythropoiesis in humans have not been studied previously, the blood volume, red cell survival, ferrokinetics, and erythropoietin (ESF) excretion were determined in a group of pituitary dwarfs. All patients were on maintenance thyroid and adrenal steroids. In addition, human growth hormone (HGH) and, in some cases, testosterone were added to the regimen. Before HGH, the red cell mass (RCM) was 50 to 75% of normal and was substantially improved by addition of HGH values within the normal female range.
