Despite the wide variety of antibiotic agents effective against bacterial diseases by the year 1957, no agent was available for the systemic mycoses until amphotericin B became available that year. Early experience with this drug was summarized in a presentation before the 40th Annual Session of the American College of Physicians in 1959. Since that time the serious toxic effects, especially on the bone marrow and the kidney, and the unpleasant general reactions in the form of nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills that the patient experiences have led to continuing search for better agents.
