It is recognized that the rejection of allografts requires direct contact between target cells and host lymphocytes. Also, many tumors are antigenically distinct from the host's normal cells; yet, their antigenicity either fails to promote an immune response in the host, or if a response is provoked, it is inadequate to limit tumor growth.
We have hypothesized that this failure is due to the high net negative surface charge exhibited by both tumor cells and lymphocytes and that Coulomb forces generated when these cells approach each other impede cell-to-cell contact and thereby inhibit both the recognition of cellular antigens and
