Recent progress in pathology has given rise to innumerable articles but to relatively few critical reviews. A series of such reviews may be found in this Volume II of Modern Trends in Pathology, by nine British and two American authors (Volume I was published in 1959). As emphasized by the editor, the aim of this book is not only to survey the present state of knowledge but also to illustrate the wide range of techniques now available to pathologists. These techniques include electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, epidemiologic disciplines, immunologic methods, and experimental procedures, particularly those applicable to the study of inflammation
