After a brief and historically oriented review of the topic, the authors' view of pathogenesis in paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is presented, and it may be summarized as follows. In the majority of cases, hypofunction of the pituitary or of its target glands induces hypothalamic excitation, which not only serves to stimulate endocrine activity but also spreads to cell groups controlling vegetative activity and thus induces tachycardia. This hypothesis receives support, the authors claim, from beneficial results of endocrine substitution therapy including pituitary implantation. To me, this aspect of the book is somewhat less than convincing.
