The areas of investigation using antibiotics advance with such rapidity and encompass such a wide range of specialized disciplines of molecular biology, microbiology, and chemistry that it is virtually impossible to keep abreast of these developments.
To fulfill this need, authors were selected from among prominent active investigators who had some part in determining the mechanisms discussed. The chapters are limited for the most part to the better documented mechanisms, and the in vitro molecular biology is emphasized. Clinical applications or industrial aspects are not considered, with the exception of a discussion of penicillin and an occasional caution about extrapolation
