The sixth volume of the large German survey of pediatrics in the form of a "Handbook," edited by Drs. H. Opitz and F. Schmid, consists of two treatises. They are independent monographs, even textbooks. One part (618 pages) deals with disorders of the supporting tissues, the second (519 pages) is devoted to diseases of the blood. One may well ask whether surveys of such vast fields are still feasible today. In the preface Dr. Weicker, the editor of this volume, stresses the limitations that had to be imposed on the contributors and the reasons for placing the emphasis more on
