The useful lifespan of highly technical books in the biomedical sciences seems to be inversely related to the number that are published annually. The present work is one of those rare exceptions. Appearing in an English translation five years after its initial publication in German, it is still the definitive work in its field, useful to both the basic scientist and the clinical practitioner. There are not many books for which such a claim can be made!
