Laboratory medicine is now committed to a period of technical innovation in which automated techniques, electronic devices, and "prepackage" methodology are extending the range and accuracy of the information available for clinical application. For the clinical pathologist this offers the opportunity for exploring individual problems with increasing depth and sophistication, but difficulties may arise for the technologist in maintaining competence in the performance of a widening range of tests and for the practicing physician in keeping abreast of their selection and interpretation. It is in these fields that the new edition of this well-established manual finds its most appropriate application.
