This volume reflects the usual high quality of scientific symposia sponsored by the Ciba Foundation in London. This one on interferon was held on the tenth anniversary of Isaacs' and Lindemann's discovery of interferon, a nontoxic, natural, antiviral agent produced by cells. It reflects the invested interest of molecular biologists, microbiologists, virologists, biochemists, immunologists, and physicians in this agent and the large amount of information that has been accumulated. The role of interferon as a defense factor in resistance to virus disease and its potential use as an antiviral agent has been much anticipated and discussed in the past. But,
