It is my pleasant assignment in this Symposium in Dr. Stead's honor to say something about the man to whom we, his friends and former pupils, are paying tribute.
I first became acquainted with Gene Stead in 1939 at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital where he was a Research Fellow in the Department of Medicine. Before that, he had spent his boyhood in Atlanta and had studied medicine at Emory. After internships in both medicine and surgery at the Brigham he had gone to the Thorndike Laboratories as Research Fellow, then to the Cincinnati General Hospital where he was chief
