One suspects that truly successful multiauthored texts that attempt to encompass broad areas of medicine owe their success to skillful, yet tough, editors who carefully outline topics to be covered and insist on adequate revision of submitted chapters until high standards of literary and expository skill have been met. Unfortunately, the present volume shows few signs of having been subjected to such vigorous stewardship.
The book is organized into five sections. Section I covers normal and pathologic physiology. On the whole, the chapters are informative, relatively complete, well written, and adequately referenced. Whether potential users will flock to this section
