The patient with ulcer is to be given this to help him understand his disease and its complications and the principles underlying treatment. Dr. Potter makes the assumption that ulcer is a chronic disease with lifelong tendency to recurrence, and therefore the patient is instructed in a continued preventive approach.
The language and presentation in the book would seem to make it valuable only for a fairly well-educated individual. In discussing treatment, Dr. Potter describes how antacids and anticholinergic drugs work and calls attention to the harmful effect of aspirin.
