To the Editor: In their paper, "Agranulocytosis with Monohistiocytosis Associated with Ampicillin Therapy," Drs. Graf and Tarlov (1) fail to note recent studies on the origin of the monocyte that would explain the monocytosis seen in recovery from agranulocytosis as well as its protective effect. This work, reviewed by Leder (2), suggests that the monocyte arises from the promyelocyte and is the primary source of inflammatory macrophages.
Therefore, one could propose that the following occurs in recovery from agranulocytosis: It is a common observation that the myeloid series appears to regenerate in successive stages of increasing maturity so that early
