The construction of a concise and meaningful text bringing together all that is fundamental of the many facets of cardiovascular medicine is a most difficult undertaking; however, the present authors have been successful to a certain extent in their attempt to put together a short presentation of this complex subject. The material is divided into four sections. The first describes the physical examination, the second covers special investigations, the third deals with general syndromes and treatment, and the final part consists of discussions of the specific types of heart disease according to cause.
