Clear thinking about clinical disturbances of acid-base metabolism is only possible on the basis of a firm grasp of some indispensable foundations in chemistry. Clinicians and students have often been intimidated by the seeming complexity of acid-base metabolism and have been discouraged from laying foundations solid enough to give them understanding and the satisfaction that comes from understanding. Dr. Frisell has written a small masterpiece of clear, precise, and concise exposition setting forth the necessary minimum of what in his foreword Dr. William R. Waddell calls "elementary but not simple chemistry."
