To determine whether cyproterone acetate, a progestational antiandrogen compound, decreased testosterone production by a direct effect on the testis or indirectly by inhibition of pituitary gonadotrophins, urinary testosterone glucuronide and luteinizing hormone were assayed at simultaneous intervals in patients with carcinoma of the prostate before and during drug therapy, 250 mg daily. The effect of cyproterone acetate on testicular function was also assessed by comparison of levels of urinary testosterone glucuronide on the third and fourth days of stimulation with human chorionic gonadotrophin before and during administration of the test drug.
