Pheochrome tumors have been identified in 10 of 28 members of a family. In four of these tumor patients we observed the unexpected coexistence of normal blood pressure and increased urinary norepinephrine. In one of these four, despite normal blood pressure and urinary norepinephrine, bilateral tumors were found at surgical exploration.
To study the mechanism of this paradox we infused carbon-14 (14C) norepinephrine into normal family members and pheochromocytoma patients before and after tumor removal and followed its metabolism; catecholamine content and monoamine oxidase activity in tumor tissue were assayed.
