The fundamental electrical properties of the heart—conduction, excitability, and refractoriness—were studied in 30 open-chest, anesthetized dogs during the first 15 min after anterior descending or circumflex coronary artery occlusion. The latter was accomplished by direct ligation or by clamping a femoral-distal coronary arterial shunt. During the first minute, conduction time of impulses into the ischemic zone of the ventricle was shortened, and excitability was enhanced. These changes were prevented by distal perfusion of the occluded artery with nonoxygenated Tyrode® but not by pretreatment with propranolol, 1 mg/kg intravenously.
