During rebreathing to determine the functional residual capacity (FRC) by the closed-circuit method, three tests of the distribution of ventilation may also be performed, provided instrumental response is rapid enough. Standards were measured in 115 normal subjects, and correlation with disease was made in 125 patients using the nitrogen meter. The Fowler single-breath test or a variant is performed on the first breath and is thought to become abnormal because of the increased proportion of slowly emptying alveoli; this test is quite sensitive to early changes in obstructive disease. The forced equilibrium expiration (FEE) at 2 min to 500 ml
