Many of the major advances in renal physiology during the past decade have accrued as a direct result of the revival in interest and rapid growth in the use of micropuncture techniques in this country and in Europe. The demonstration that active sodium transport is responsible for the bulk of tubular fluid reabsorption, the evidence necessary to prove the counter-current theory of urine concentration, the mechanism of urinary acidification, and the elucidation of numerous transport processes by the renal tubules are but a few of the achievements of micropuncture studies within this relatively short period of time.
