Since the author is a surgeon one would suppose that his predisposition would be the therapy of surgical acute renal failure, and such a book would indeed be a welcome addition to the extensive, mostly internistic treatment of this topic. This, however, is not the case. The prevention of acute renal failure by suitable management during anesthesia, the immediate pre- and postoperative treatment of patients in shock, and pros and cons of mannitol therapy find only cryptic mention. In contrast, the author ventures deeply into the still quite unclear pathogenetic mechanisms of this condition and not always with full success.
