An attempt to define a dynamic, pathophysiologic process only by the morbid anatomic changes with which it is associated inevitably brings to mind the well-known allegory of the three blind men and the elephant. Thus, this monograph in the American Lectures in Living Chemistry Series which, in the words of the authors, "describes an investigation . . . into the cause of right ventricular hypertrophy in pulmonary emphysema," fails to fulfill this goal because of lack of clinical correlation with their own autopsy material.
