With a number of excellent texts available one wonders why it is necessary to have another general text on virology. However, closer scrutiny shows that this book is an excellent addition. It is well organized, clearly written, comprehensive, and up to date. The illustrations are excellent, and the tables and charts are uniform and well worked into the text. It is primarily intended for the student who is interested in viruses from the basic point of view and not specificially directed at practitioners of medicine or virologists.
