A comprehensive review of the advances in cardiovascular surgery since 1960 when the first volume of Modern Trends in Cardiac Surgery was published would be an overwhelming task for the author and the reader. Fortunately, the editors have not attempted this but have concentrated on specific areas of current interest and activity. These include three chapters on cardiac valve surgery, four on the more difficult congenital problems, and one chapter each concerning aortic aneurysms and the surgical anatomy of the heart.
