The principles of medical interviewing in a programmed format constitute the focus of this manual. Principles are stated and on the bases of case vignettes questions are addressed to the reader to which the authors subsequently render answers, indicating their preference.
The manual is divided into three parts: instruction in physician's responses; practice interviews; and an appendix for recording and
organizing data. The first section suggests the way to prepare and to initiate an interview. A chapter, "Assisting the Patient Narrative," identifies such vital techniques as facilitation, support, reassurance, empathy, confrontation, reflection, interpretation, silence, and summation.
