Recent developments in our knowledge of the respiratory viruses and in means of prophylaxis against them were reviewed by a World Health Organization (WHO) scientific group that met in Geneva from October 9 through October 14, 1967. This review is now summarized in a readable, brief bulletin of 100 pages in the WHO Technical Report Series1. Major viruses of the group under consideration are influenza viruses, parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses, and rhinoviruses. Occasionally enteroviruses are respiratory pathogens. The report was written before the recent pandemic due to influenza A2 (Hong Kong).
