In 1968 the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported for the calendar year 31,060 forcible and attempted rapes and statutory rapes with force. The increase of 84% since 1960 is part of a general expression of increased violence, shown by similar increases in murder, aggravated assault, and robbery. The victim risk rate per 100,000 females was 62 in the large-core cities, 23 in the suburbs, and 17 in rural areas. Both city and suburban rates are rising rapidly (1).
