As methods of teaching electrocardiography vary, so do presentations of this material in primers for the novice and the student. Dr. Ritota's goal is presentation of the basic knowledge essential to the interpretation of commonly seen electrocardiograms. He achieves this with a "pattern" approach, using a pictoral presentation, the text being kept to a minimum and presented in a didactic, syllabus form. Whereas brevity is accomplished, the syllabus approach does not necessarily achieve clarity. Basic electrophysiologic principles are not covered.
